The Disciples of Christ Historical Society is now fully moved into its new facilities. It is located in historic Bethany (WV) adjacent to the grounds of the Alexander Campbell study and mansion and across the street from the Campbell cemetery. The building was completed by renovating the Renner Visitors Center and adding an extensive archives room housing artifacts, portraits, institutional records, books, and journals from the early nineteenth century restoration movement to the present. A reading room, study carrels, and conference room provide welcoming, comfortable space for research and meetings. Of special note is the Peter and Lynne Morgan Gathering Place, an outdoor hospitality area for receptions, conversations, and relaxation.
To celebrate this settlement, a building dedication and blessing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2:00 pm, EDT. Friends of the Society from the three streams of the movement will be gathered to join in celebration of this historical event. Those unable to attend in person can participate by viewing the service at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/bethanywvadmin/
Following the dedication will be a tour of historic sites in the Bethany area. The evening concludes with the Kirkpatrick Lecture in the Old Meetinghouse by Dr. D. Newell Williams, president and professor of Modern and American Church History at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. His presentation will be “Stone-Campbell History: Past and Future.” Closing the evening will be a communion service using nineteenth century Stone-Campbell communion ware.
Sunday morning worship will be held at Bethany Memorial Church with Dr. Douglas A. Foster preaching He is associate professor of Church History in the Graduate School of Theology at Abilene Christian University and director of the Center for Restoration Studies there.
The address of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society is P.O. Box D, Bethany, West Virginia 26032.
