People participating in the Sayre Christian Church’s Fall Festival to Impact Hunger, Saturday, Sept. 19, were not only there to have fun, but also to help children in third-world countries and in the Valley dealing with hunger.
Pastor Kevin Arensman said church members were looking at ways they could help people, both locally and beyond, when they heard about the group Stop Hunger Now, from a relative of a church member.
"We want people to have that hands-on experience of actually feeding 10,000 needy children," said Arensman. "It still gives me chills when I think about what we are accomplishing."
Volunteers packaged 10,152 of these meals as part of Saturday’s festivities, which will be distributed to school children in third-world countries.
By providing the food to children in school, Arensman said the organization is also providing a hand up for these struggling countries to better themselves through education.
Rich Armenia, program manager for Stop Hunger Now’s Philadelphia chapter, said that community efforts like the one in Sayre Saturday are very important to the charity’s mission. Non-perishable food was also accepted Saturday to benefit local food pantries.
The Fall Festival to Impact Hunger also featured live music, pulled pork sandwiches, and children’s activities.
